Birdwatching is a sport for anyone. You can hike nature trails, take special trips to “birdy” locations, birdwatch on vacation or just birdwatch from your car or kitchen window. Some people keep life lists, some don’t. It can be competitive, or just relaxing or fun. You can choose! You can bird as simply, or as “technical” as you wish. You can use just your eyes and ears, or binoculars and spotting scopes. You can birdwatch on walks with a guide who will help you do ID, you can learn to use birding ID books, or you can use phone apps as ID aids. You can record your finds with notebooks, phone apps, cameras, or just your memories. Classroom intro is Tuesday, February 18, Keith Valley Middle School, 7:00 - 8:30 PM, Our first class will be in the classroom. Bring your phones, and if you have them, binoculars and field guides. What we will learn in this first class: Binocular basics: how to choose a pair that suits you, and how to use them. Field Guide basics: why so many birders still prefer a printed book as a learning/ID tool and how to choose a good guidebook. Phone apps: Audubon, Merlin, eBird. We will also learn some bird ID basics The remaining three classes will be field trips to some good local birding “hot spots.” Field Trip 1 Saturday March 15, 8:00 - 10:30 AM Peace Valley Nature Center 170 N. Chapman Road, Doylestown. Meet in the Nature Center parking lot. This is a great spot for water birds of many types Field Trip 2 Saturday April 19, 8:00 - 10:30 AM High School Park, High School Rd & Montgomery Ave., Elkins Park. There is free parking on Saturdays in the SEPTA lot at the corner of Montgomery & Harrison. Meet at the foot of the stairs down from the SEPTA lot into the park This is a good location for a variety of songbirds and hawks. Field Trip 3 Saturday May 10, 8:00 - 10:30 AM Fort Washington State Park, Militia Hill Day, use area. Entrance off of Militia Hill Road, meet at the parking lot nearest the Hawk Watch Platform. A good area for swallows, bluebirds, and hopefully Spring warblers. Travel to the Saturday Birding locations will be on your own. Be sure to bring your binos; and a water bottle and a snack are recommended. | |

Join us on Saturday, May 17, 2025, for a free day in New York City! We will be departing KVMS at 8:00 am via deluxe motorcoach for a non-stop drive to NYC. Our driver will drop us off in the Theatre District where our trip chaperone will lead us to the Broadway half-price ticket line. Not interested in a Broadway Show, use your day to visit the 911 Memorial, Shop or have FUN at the 9th Avenue International Food Festival, a NYC tradition you can’t miss. Our driver will inform us of where to meet the coach departing promptly at 6:45pm back to Horsham. Do you have a digital camera but simply don’t know how to use it in anything other than auto mode? Tired of your photos simply not being good or creative? Do your photos many times seem blurry or too dark, or don’t capture the moment the way you envision? Do you want to develop a photographic eye? In this class you will learn the basic skills that will give you total control over your camera to capture the look and feel desired in your photography. This is a truly beginner course and we will move along at a pace that ensures everyone understands the principles behind great photography, but it’s also a wonderful class for the more experienced photographer that is looking for inspiration to sharpen their skillset and enhance their education. This is a “hands on” class that will utilize your camera in virtually every class. You’ll learn about various photography techniques and solidify them through weekly outside assignments and an in-house photography exhibition. Schedule and weather permitting, we’ll plan a field trip to further enhance your shooting style and skills. We’ll also cover various lens options and using flash. The course does require that you have a camera that will enable you to shoot in Auto, Manual, Aperture and Shutter Priority modes. This 10-week course is designed to further perfect the basic obedience exercises learned in the below Level 1 course. Develop control and holding skills necessary for owner-dog teams to participate in therapy dog and canine good citizen activities. Specific obedience exercises and assistive devices will be used in particular situations to provide a rewarding experience for both handler and dog. This is a beginner’s course in dog obedience training in which the handler and dog learn together. The aim of the course is to produce happy, well-adjusted, obedient canine citizens through a training program emphasizing praise and kindness. Basic commands of “heel”, “sit”, “down”, “stand”, “stay”, and “come” will be taught with ample time for discussion of individual problems. Necessary collars and leashes are available in class. Enjoy learning to play Modern American Canasta, an entertaining and wildly popular card game.
