One of the most popular activities in the world is birdwatching. It’s fun, it’s challenging, and it’s educational. You can go “birding” from a window, from a car, from a chair, anywhere. You can stay in one place or walk. And you will meet some of the friendliest people wherever you go. Watching birds is an art, a science, and a very portable hobby. Join this class for an exciting educational experience that will take you to 3 different locations over the course of 3 months. Dates and Times: Classroom Introduction - Keith Valley Middle School - February 13 - 7:00 8:30p.m. Please bring your binoculars, field guides, and mobile phones. In this introductory class you will learn about binoculars – how to choose a pair, how to focus them, how to take care of them, and how to use them. You will also have a chance to look at a variety of field guides and how to use them. If you prefer to use your phone to learn about birds, download the free app Merlin. You will learn how to use Merlin during class, plus some skills that will help you locate and describe birds and learn their songs. The following 3 classes will take place outdoors at different places Field trip 1 – Saturday, February 24 – 8:30 10:30 a.m.meet @ High School Park in Elkins Park. Free parking in the SEPTA lot next to the park. Train station 1 block from park. The 77 bus stops @ corner. Do you have a digital camera but simply don’t know how to use it in anything other than auto mode? Tired of your photos simply not being good or creative? Do your photos many times seem blurry or too dark, or don’t capture the moment the way you envision? Do you want to develop a photographic eye? In this class you will learn the basic skills that will give you total control over your camera to capture the look and feel desired in your photography. This is a truly beginner course and we will move along at a pace that ensures everyone understands the principles behind great photography, but it’s also a wonderful class for the more experienced photographer that is looking for inspiration to sharpen their skillset and enhance their education. This is a “hands on” class that will utilize your camera in virtually every class. You’ll learn about various photography techniques and solidify them through weekly outside assignments and an in-house photography exhibition. Schedule and weather permitting, we’ll plan a field trip to further enhance your shooting style and skills. We’ll also cover various lens options and using flash. The course does require that you have a camera that will enable you to shoot in Auto, Manual, Aperture and Shutter Priority modes. Please make sure to bring your camera and manual (if you have one) to all classes as we will use them during class often.

This course You will not only learn how to use professional methods but why these techniques are used and utilize that knowledge in other areas of photography. There will be in depth discussions of digital capture, camera controls, the purpose of lighting concepts. Color &, compositional guidelines as well . The Photoshop portion of the class will cover the importance of raw processing, perfecting the most common corrections and digital retouching skills. 16. CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP

This writing workshop will introduce writers of all levels to the collaborative nature of workshopping. Writers will learn how to identify their core ideas and develop all aspects of plot, characterization, and storyline. The course is comprised of weekly in-class writing sessions, which highlight various elements of writing, and bi-weekly prompt- based assignments that allow writers to develop their own works of fiction, children’s writing, and memoir.  Since no writer writes in a silo, stories will be shared in class and writers will critique, advise, and help each other to make the most of their endeavors. Students will discuss various works that resonate with him/her and learn how to implement aspects of these into his/her own writing samples. In addition, this course will introduce writers to Query letter writing and discussions will include various publications that look for certain types of fiction submissions.  All writers must have a notebook and pen from day one.

This is a beginner’s course in dog obedience training in which the handler and dog learn together. The aim of the course is to produce happy, well-adjusted, obedient canine citizens through a training program emphasizing praise and kindness. Basic commands of “heel”, “sit”, “down”, “stand”, “stay”, and “come” will be taught with ample time for discussion of individual problems. Necessary collars and leashes are available in class. 50. COMPARATIVE MYTHOLOGY

The theme for spring term 2024 is  Written in the Stars. In this session we will investigate myths linked to constellations. The Big Dipper, which has a meaning for every cultural group, will be our starting point. Among other stories, we will discuss how Orion the Hunter came to be in the sky, and why Venus is the most storied of the planets. Each class member will be assisted in discovering the tales behind his or her zodiac symbol.
